I think that to really have a great hero journey, you have to be well balanced and achieving this starts with recognizing your strengths and weaknesses. I feel like I am good at problem solving and figuring things out in a practical way. I also think that I am very good at seeing and understanding the world around me. Sometimes this is much easier to understanding while looking back on a situation but I am usualy pretty good at interperating a person’s current mood or even the feel for a situation I find myself in. I would say I am smart, but not completely school smart in the sense that things like math and languages do not always come naturaly to me.
To help me with my hero journey I would like the aid of Courage, wisdom, joy, selflessness, humor and humility. I choose these things becuase I think that they are needed to live an enjoying, fulfilling life.
1. Courage- I am an adventourus person, but like all people, sometimes it is hard to follow your heart or what you think is right becuase often times that forces us to face our fears. I need courage because I want to be able to look my fears in the eye and chuckle just a little as I walk past them. I also think that to even start a hero journey takes great courage in the first place.
2. Wisdom- In books and movies the old man always seems to have lots of wisdom. I think this is because the older you are, the more you have seen and you have had more time to think about the things that have happened to you. I would love to have the ability to make wise decisions, accounting for my future and the present before I make big decisions. I think asking myself ” what would you think about this in five years ?” could help make me realize how wise my choices are.
3. Joy- to me joy is so simple. It is enjoying life, looking at things on the bright side and trying to get a couple smiles out of each day. I chose joy for a simple reason : enjoying life, even if times are tough, gives us a reason be happy ! I believe that life is about the trip, not just where we are going. I think that if you want to be a doctor thats awesome, but enjoy your journey to your goal, don’t get caught up looking to far ahead and forgetting the present. For me, in order to enjoy my journey Joy is important.
4. Selflessness- I chose this because I want to help others. If at any point I find myself looking out for only me and not being openly giving and helpful in my life, I will consider this a major crisis.
5. Humor- I love cracking jokes, laughing, and having fun. I think that humor can not only help with these things, but help us get through tough or emberassing moments as well. I figure you can either laugh or cry about it sometimes, and if you laugh so hard you cry its sorta like a two for one.
6 Humility – I choose this, because even If I have forty billion dollars all I want is a jeep and a motorcycle. Now, I know saying this without forty billion dollars in the bank is much easier, but I value humility and to me a ferrari is not as important as helping kids in need all over the world, so why by a huge house and tons of cars when I don’t need them ? But humility is not just buying flashy things, I feel like it helps people stay true to who they really are by not letting things go to their head. When I am forty, I do not want the seventeen year old me to be disapointed, I want the seventeen year old me say sweet jeep, lets go to a cubs game.
The hero journey is a really cool concept, and for me to have a succesfull one I think I need all of these things.
